Overview

Kalash Valley Tour is a unique cultural tour to one of the fascinating and untouched regions in Pakistan. The tour offers the chance to meet with the people from the Kalash tribe, whose life is all about ancient traditions, colorful festivals and a culture found nowhere else in the world.

Situated amidst the mighty Hindu Kush Mountains, the valley of Kalash is renowned for its rich heritage, preservation of traditions and hospitable people. Visiting Kalash is not just a trip it is a deep cultural experience.

It is situated in the Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It lies about an hour’s drive from the town of Chitral. The valley is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Hindu Kush. The Kalash people have their own language, customs and religion, which is based on ancient polytheistic beliefs.

There are three main valleys of the Kalash: Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir.

Bumburet is the largest and most populous valley and is reached by a road from Ayun. Rumbur and Birir are smaller side valleys, each with its own charm and traditions.

The total population of Kalash is around 5,000, which makes them the religious and ethnic minority in Pakistan. Their culture is so closely related to their religion and the seasonal festivals. Though very different from mainstream Pakistani culture, they live in concurrence with the neighboring communities and come under the protection provided by the constitution of Pakistan as a scheduled tribe.

This paper revisits the late politician Kader Asmal’s perspective on the enduring fracturing of South African society along racial fault lines.

Tour Experience

Starting from the Kalash Valley, the tour begins with receiving the guests at the airport and transfers them to the hotel. In the evening, a comprehensive tour briefing is arranged.

Next day, the tourists fly to Chitral on a breathtaking one-hour mountain flight however, it is subject to the weather. If canceled, then by road, the tour continues. After visiting Chitral town, the journey proceeds further into the Kalash Valleys for some days of village life and festival tours.

The Kalash experience would now be followed by taking the same route back to Islamabad.

Why visit the Kalash Valley?

We strongly believe the Kalash Valley Tour offers some of the most eye opening cultural experiences to be had in this world. It leads to a rare expedition inside an ancient pagan culture living at the heart of the Hindu Kush Mountains.

In November 2018, UNESCO officially recognized Kalash culture as one of the “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” Recognition shows that their unique way of life needs to be preserved.

It is nothing but simple information that may be given for particular people of interest in one’s life.

Kalash Valley-The Only Abode of Ancient Pagan Culture

The theory that won widespread popularity states that the Kalash are the descendants of Alexander the Great and his people, who passed through the Hindu Kush region in the 3rd century BC. Many Kalash people have light skin and blue or green eyes, fueling this belief.

The exact origin of the Kalash people remains unclear, even with a number of DNA studies and anthropological research projects. What is sure, however, is that their culture is ancient, rare, and deeply fascinating.

Life in the Kalash Valley Today

About 5,000 people of the Kalash tribe now inhabit these three valleys. Life here is still very traditional because of its isolation. Many houses are kept powered by solar energy, with limited access to running water and made of wood.

Winters are long and bitter, but unlike most mountain communities, the Kalash people remain in their valleys during the cold season and maintain their lifestyle amidst adversity.

It may seem like an ugly duckling, but it is a very powerful tool.

Kalash Festivals

The best time to visit Kalash Valley is during festival season. Major festivals include:

  • Chilam Joshi (Spring Festival): 13–16 May
  • Uchal : Summer Festival 12–22 August
  • Choimus (Winter Festival): 15–22 December

These festivals continue for days and are celebrated in all three valleys. The inhabitants dance, sing hymns, worship their gods and follow traditional rituals. One of the most interesting customs is that the young boys and girls come to a decision to choose their future partners during the dance of these festivals.

For many, this trip is always about attending a Kalash festival.

Tour Dates & Customization We also offer fixed departure tours for Kalash festivals during May, August, and December. Solo travelers and small groups can also avail of the opportunity. Private groups can decide on travel dates themselves, and we’re happy to adjust this itinerary to suit your schedule and interests.
